It would be impossible to quantify how long this book would actually be if you wrote out every permutation of all the ideas contained in it. We’ve restricted the notation and TAB to a specific fingering, a specific octave, and a specific start and end point—but this is just the beginning. It’s up to you to turn this book into 100 books, and a lifetime of work.

I always felt that when I saw an entire exercise of just one mode, it was rather one dimensional, and led the player to get stuck in a rut in terms of the sounds, shapes, and patters he or she might play. Playing through every step of the major scale on each exercise, and therefore playing each cell in every mode, will help make all of the these sounds feel like second nature in your playing.

For me, it has always been about working on this stuff as much as possible, and then burying it away in my muscle memory as soon as possible, so I can take it out of the chain of thoughts that happen while I’m playing. The less elements in the thought process when we perform, the more honest our playing will be.
