I blogged some months ago about a norwegian trumpeter who was playing a concert in an office cubicle… Well that was the start of a listening journey for me that eventually led to me meeting said trumpeter and sitting down for a short interview backstage at the Rochester Jazz Festival last month.
It’s not that often that I find a performer that challenges everything I know about music, but when it happens it’s the biggest breath of fresh air and inspiration that I know of. Melodic innovation is something I’m always conscious of, rarely reach, and am always searching for in my own music as well as other musicians and composers. The level at which Mathias operates is something quite extraordinary, and finally getting to hear him live reiterated how great an experience listening to his music on records had been over the past few months.
Im very grateful to live in a time where I can see something on youtube, become inspired, and then actually meet this new musical hero of mine in the space of just a few months.
